Before we dive into the specifics, could you introduce yourself and share a bit about your background and the experiences that have shaped your path in entrepreneurship?

My name is Matthew Rodriguez, and I’m the founder of MRODPHOTOS, a photography brand rooted in capturing raw, authentic moments that tell a deeper story. Growing up in the Bronx, I was always surrounded by vibrant culture and energy, which sparked my curiosity for visual storytelling. Over time, I realized that photography wasn’t just about images—it was about preserving emotions and creating meaningful connections. I’m especially inspired by photographing families and expecting mothers, as these moments are some of the most precious in life. Knowing that my work helps people relive these memories for generations drives my passion every day.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career, and how did you navigate it?

Transitioning from a passionate photographer to running a full-fledged business was a major challenge. While photography itself came naturally, mastering the business side—pricing, contracts, marketing, and client relations—was a learning curve. To overcome this, I sought mentorship, studied business strategies, and learned to confidently value my work. One of the hardest but most important lessons was understanding that saying no to undervalued opportunities is necessary for growth and sustainability.

What are some common misconceptions about professional photography, and how would you clarify them?

A major misconception is that photography is just about clicking a button. In reality, it’s a craft that requires an in-depth understanding of lighting, composition, subject direction, and post-processing. Another misconception is that great images happen instantly—when in fact, hours of planning, capturing, and editing go into every session to ensure the final product truly represents the subject’s story.

What tools, resources, or strategies have played a key role in your success?

My workflow revolves around tools like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop for editing, Capture One for tethered shooting, and Pixieset for client galleries. Beyond software, networking has been one of my most valuable strategies—building strong connections with fellow creatives, event planners, and businesses has opened doors to new opportunities. Social media, especially Instagram, has also been instrumental in reaching new clients and showcasing my work in a visually impactful way.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in photography?

Master your craft, stay consistent, and build real connections. Invest time in learning about light, composition, and editing—not just gear. Your camera is a tool, but your understanding of storytelling is what sets you apart. Also, price your work fairly from the beginning and don’t be afraid to advocate for your value. Lastly, be patient—growth takes time, and persistence will separate those who succeed from those who give up too soon.

How has networking influenced your career, and how do you approach building meaningful professional relationships?

Networking has been a game-changer in my career. Whether it’s collaborating with other photographers, working with event planners, or connecting with clients through referrals, relationships have been key to my growth. I approach networking by being intentional—engaging with others genuinely, attending industry events, and offering value before asking for anything in return. Supporting fellow creatives by sharing their work or assisting on shoots has also helped build long-term, mutually beneficial relationships.

What impact do you hope to leave on the photography industry and your community?

I want to inspire others to see photography as a powerful tool for storytelling, not just a service. My goal is to create images that capture authenticity, culture, and emotion in a way that resonates deeply with people. I’m especially passionate about creating lifelong memories for families and expecting mothers—these moments are irreplaceable, and I take pride in helping families preserve them through timeless photography. Beyond my work, I hope to mentor and uplift aspiring photographers—especially those from underrepresented communities—by sharing knowledge and opportunities to help them succeed in this industry.
