NO GATEKEEPING! INTERVIEW
Thank you for joining me today. As someone who has navigated challenges to turn a vision into reality, How do you believe your unique background and perspective have contributed to your success as an entrepreneur?
My background in the health field especially in psychiatry has helped a lot for my entrepreneurial journey. In understanding mental health and wellness, helped connect with people more through networking, building the business, and marketing. And adopting the an idea I learned from Richard Branson (Virgin Group), which was he created several business ideas in a year and review the performance after a year being in the market. This has allowed me to not feel so pressured to stick to an idea that not working at this time.
Before we dive into the specifics, could you introduce yourself and share a bit about your background and the experiences that have shaped your path in entrepreneurship?
My name is Jaleesa Payne from Bronx, New York. During Covid, I felt stuck, depressed, and not productive. In pursuit of creating harmony at home, I shared this with my family and we created our current business named Modern Hippiez a lifestyle brand with aromatherapy products.
What strategies do you employ to turn obstacles into opportunities for growth in your business?
One strategy I employ when managing obstacles is reviewing the facts. Best example: When vending at a popup event, I would review the cost to vend and get to the event. I would then pay attention to Host and how they manage the event, public feedback on our products, profits, and other vendors experience. In many cases if we don’t make a big profit or make the table back, we get asked to do other events through networking. Also I am able to obtain more information about opportunities and new marketing strategies. As well as gifted other business with samples of our products.
Support your
Brother's Mental Health
We know that men’s mental health affects everyone—wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends. Together, we can make sure that the men in our lives have a safe space to find support, connect, and grow.
As you look back, what advice would you give to your younger self when starting your entrepreneurial venture?
The advice I would give my younger self is be very patient with the process and yourself. Also keep sticking to your word! Your thoughts, words, and actions will be rewarding when you get over the tough or stuck times
In your opinion, what role does networking play in the continuous evolution and adaptability of an entrepreneur?
Networking plays a big part in my evolution and growth of my business. We have been able to get different kinds of exposure for my business ranging from small pop up events to out of town big events with celebrities. Our products ranging from candles, incense, room sprays, activity books has allowed me to get a lot of feedback from range of individuals. (16 years old and up). We have been asked to do custom projects for customers ranging from unique scents, activity books, and resin art. And we are able to understand a lot better what the public is looking for.
It's like a rulebook that tells everyone exactly how a brand should look, sound, and feel so that it's recognizable everywhere
